More than 7,000 people will be employed and more than $2 billion will be spent by the government to undertake Jamaica’s 15th population and housing census.

That’s according to Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke.

Speaking at the launch of the national census this morning (August 10), Dr. Clarke noted that the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) has been undergoing preparatory work for the census for several months.

He noted that the undertaking is a major investment for the government.

Dr. Clarke emphasized that the census data will be instrumental in helping Jamaica understand the distribution and use of technology across the country.

He said the data will provide useful information as Jamaica moves toward becoming a digital society.

Meantime, Prime Minister Andrew Holness sought to allay fears about data privacy breaches as it relates to the national census.

Information to be collected during the census include, age, gender, education and training, economic activity, and religion, among others.

Mr. Holness noted that legislation stipulates that data collected be kept confidential.
