One of the four people injured in an explosion and fire at a garage facility adjacent to the Beryllium compound on South Camp Road in Kingston has died.
The individual who is an external contractor was performing work within the garage facility at the time of the incident.
Beryllium in a statement says two of the injured individuals have been airlifted to the United States to receive specialised burn treatment and critical care.
Another injured individual continues to receive medical treatment and support locally.
Since the incident, the company says it has been working closely with local and international medical professionals, emergency support teams, and relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary medical, logistical, and family support arrangements are in place for those affected.
Professional counsellors have also been engaged to provide emotional support and trauma counselling to members of staff affected by the incident at the location.
Speaking with reporters at the Norman Manley International Airport, Deputy Chairman of Guardsman Group Nicholas Benjamin stressed that the time for treating burn victims is critical.
According to him, evacuating these individuals off the island within 24 hours of the incident is crucial to their recovery.
Meanwhile, co-founder of the Burn Foundation of Jamaica Stephen Josephs said all of the individuals received third-degree burns.
He commended doctors at the Kingston Public Hospital for their swift communication regarding patient status and for effectively stabilizing them.
