The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says there is an 80 % reduction in the backlog for garbage collection islandwide.

Executive Director Audley Gordon says the figure has moved down from 606 loads to 123 loads of garbage.

The agency has been engaged in major efforts to clear residential garbage and hurricane debris following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October.

The category 5 storm left thousands of loads of debris across the country.

Mr. Gordon explains that prior to the arrival of the hurricane the agency had to focus its efforts on pre hurricane clean up.

He highlights the significant reduction in the backlog and is assuring householders that the issue  is being addressed.
