NWC urges customers to settle arrears as disconnections intensify across some parishes
The National Water Commission NWC is urging customers with outstanding balances to act now as disconnections intensify across some parishes.
The Water Company says disconnection activities are now in full force.
This action follows a five-month amnesty, a customer relief programme offered last year as well as extensive community-wide engagements conducted by the NWC during the first quarter of this year.
According to the NWC, these engagements included house-to-house visits, community customer service days, weekly text message reminders, town crier announcements, public notices and community meetings.
It says despite these efforts, a number of customers have failed to take up the many relief offerings, forcing the NWC to now take drastic actions.
The NWC says its now advancing to the next phase of its revenue collection strategy.
This includes disconnections, issuance of demand letters and legal action.
For the remainder of this month, disconnection activities will target a number of areas where community engagements have already been completed.
The areas to be targeted are sections of Clarendon, St. Catherine, Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. Mary, Portland and St. Ann.
The NWC says it has exhausted all avenues of appeal and outreach and disconnection crews are now mobilized.
The Commission points out that it has a responsibility to all paying customers to collect outstanding revenue needed to maintain and upgrade the water supply systems.
Customers are reminded that the bill payment due date serves as notice that service is liable for disconnection if payment is not received.
NWC says while it remains willing to work with customers facing hardships non payment cannot be accommodated.
The Water Company says no further notice will be given before disconnection.
