The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) has called on citizens to refrain from violence, as well as to pursue peace and well-being for others.

The call follows a mass shooting in Cherry Tree Lane, Clarendon on Sunday, which left 8 persons dead and 9 others wounded.

In a statement, the JCC also called on victimized and aggrieved persons to refrain from reprisals and to allow the state, through the work of the police and the courts, to address this act of violence.

JCC General Secretary Reverend Newton Dixon said the council is especially saddened and distressed by the fact that among those killed were a 7 year-old child, women and elderly. 

Reverend Dixon said this incident marks a new nature and level of callousness, horror and terror. 

Reverend Dixon expressed hope that avenues will be created by the churches and social service providers to offer the psycho-social and spiritual support that will assist those who have been victimized.
