Policy to hold suppliers of medical equipment accountable for upkeep to be implemented

Portfolio Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton noted that it is unacceptable that when a piece of equipment breaks down the repair process takes months to complete because the supplier is waiting for parts.

Speaking on Tuesday at a signing ceremony, Dr Tufton pointed out that the soon-to-come Electro Technical Maintenance Management Policy will deal with broilers, elevators, air conditioners, among other equipment.

Dr Tufton warned that the policy will stipulate that contractors who supply certain equipment, should either abide by a maintenance standard or lose the contract.

The minister related a situation at a hospital that drew public ire, due to a malfunctioning elevator.

Dr Tufton said the contractor in this particular case should be fired.
