Night shelter for homeless persons in Ocho Rios now open

Homeless citizens of St. Ann now have a more suitable place to rest following the opening of a night shelter in Buckfield, Ocho Rios, yesterday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, minister of local government Desmond McKenzie said while the resort town is known for tourist accommodations, facilities must also be put in place for members of the homeless population.

He said the facility, which should have been completed long ago, was built at a cost of $22m.

The minister said the facility, which is an extension of the Ocho Rios drop in centre, is another demonstration of the government’s care for the vulnerable.

The facility is expected to house at least 20 individuals.

There are approximately 90 homeless people in Ocho Rios, and more than 100 across St. Ann.
