Agriculture Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. said the government will be putting greater investment into yam production.
He made the comment, while speaking at the launch of the Hague Agricultural and Industrial show in Trelawny.
According to Mr. Charles Jr., Trelawny was the second highest producer of domestic food for 2022, and the bulk of the production was attributed to yam. As such, he said the government has embarked on a yam strategy.
The Minister noted that though the production of yam for 2022 was great, it still was not able to adequately fill the demand on the market. He explained that the yam strategy is aimed at filling that gap.
Mr. Charles Jr. also called on farmers to improve yam production for the export market.
