84 churches in St. James to receive combined $16M in grant funding for Hurricane Melissa recovery

Eighty-four churches in St. James are set to receive a combined $16 million in grant funding to support cleanup, restoration and rehabilitation efforts following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last year.

The funding forms part of the Government’s $75 million Churches Clean-up and Restoration Initiative which is expected to benefit 420 churches across the parishes hardest hit by the hurricane.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie handed over the cheques to leaders of several denominations including Flanker Open Bible Church, Hillview Baptist Church, Full Gospel Central Church and Retirement Door of Faith, among others.

Speaking at a grant presentation ceremony in St. James, Mr. McKenzie emphasised that the churches receiving support were those that applied and were subsequently evaluated under the programme.

He noted that the funds will allow the churches to continue serving their communities.

He also announced that an additional $50 million will be allocated to churches in Clarendon and St. Ann to assist with recovery and restoration efforts.

Meanwhile, Mr. McKenzie defended the Government’s decision to provide financial assistance to churches amid criticism of the programme.

He argued that churches play a vital role in communities across the island and continue to provide support and services to Jamaicans particularly during times of hardship.
