Two British nationals arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine through NMIA
Two British nationals accused of attempting to smuggle over 30 pounds of cocaine, were arrested on Wednesday.
Investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division arrested a man and woman, in separate incidents, following their attempt to smuggle cocaine through the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), in Kingston.
This is the first cocaine seizure at NMIA since the start of the year.
Reports are that at about 4:25 p.m., investigators were conducting security checks for passengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London, England.
During routine interviews, a British man’s actions aroused the suspicion of the police and his luggage was searched.
This led to the discovery of 7 kilograms, or about 15 pounds, of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases he had.
During the same screening process, a British woman’s actions also aroused the suspicion of the lawmen.
A thorough search of her luggage revealed approximately 7.2 kilograms, or about 16 pounds, of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.
The combined street value of the cocaine is approximately 4 hundred and 54 thousand, 4 hundred pounds, or about 92.7 million Jamaican dollars.
The two were taken into custody and are being processed.
Their names are being withheld pending further investigations.
