Jamaicans detained in Trinidad to return home tomorrow

The six Jamaicans who have been stranded in Trinidad and Tobago for almost two weeks, after being refused entry into the country, are to return home tomorrow.

The Jamaicans are to arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston at 11:30 a.m.

Their trip home is being made possible, after friends of the six in that CARICOM country as well as security guards at the detention centre at which they are being held, pooled funds to purchase plain tickets.

The foreign affairs ministry had also said it had been making efforts to get the Jamaicans home.

However, the ministry said it was facing challenges in securing their return home due in part to the refusal of Redjet to make the relevant arrangements, to effect their return.

But Michelle Johnson - one of the six Jamaicans in the twin island republic - says efforts were made to get them home, after friends in Trinidad and guards at the St. Helena detention centre, learned that they would be transferred to Trinidad and Tobago immigration centre.

It is understood that conditions at that public immigration centre are unfavourable.

The six Jamaicans have been in Trinidad and Tobago since Monday, March 12.
