West Indies Women keep World Cup dreams alive with nail-biting win over Ireland
The West Indies women’s team held their nerve in a rain-affected thriller this morning, edging past Ireland by just six runs in a crucial ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier at the Gaddafi National Stadium.
Defending a target of 182 in 33 overs, the Caribbean side kept their hopes of World Cup qualification alive thanks to a brilliant all-round display from skipper Hayley Matthews, who led from the front with figures of 4 for 24. Ireland, in pursuit of 182, were bowled out for 175 with four balls remaining in a tense finish.
Karishma Ramharack (2 for 27) and Aaliyah Alleyne (2 for 31) provided key support as the West Indies bounced back strongly from their 11-run defeat to Scotland in their opening match.
Earlier, after being sent in to bat under overcast skies, the Windies posted a competitive 181 for 6 in their allotted 33 overs. Former captain Stafanie Taylor and Chinelle Henry were the backbone of the innings, both crafting well-paced knocks of 46. Zaida James added a handy 36, while Matthews chipped in with a valuable 23.
The result breathes new life into the West Indies campaign, lifting them to fourth on the standings with two points — level with Scotland and Bangladesh, but behind on net run rate. Group leaders Pakistan, who completed their second win in as many games today with a six-wicket triumph over Scotland, top the table with four points.
The West Indies now face a must-win encounter against tournament hosts Pakistan on Monday, once again at the Gaddafi Stadium.
