UPDATE: St. Ann’s Bay Infant School closed for the day following fire

The St. Ann’s Bay Infant School in St. Ann has been closed for the day (June 20), following a fire which destroyed sections of the institution early this morning.

Firefighters who received a call about the blaze at around 4:50 AM responded with 3 units.

Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade Emelio Ebanks said no one was injured in the blaze, but a block at the institution which housed three classrooms, two bathrooms and a store room was destroyed.

He said investigators are trying to ascertain the cause of the fire as well as the estimated loss.

Meantime, President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, La Sonja Harrison described the incident as “unfortunate.”

She said the teachers who have, in many instances, used their own funds to make the classrooms comfortable for students are mourning the loss of their investments.

Mrs. Harrison said arrangements are being made to determine if lessons can be done online, for the remainder of the week.
