NSWMA says fire at Retirement Disposal Site is under control

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says the fire at the Retirement Disposal Site tipping area in Montego Bay, St. James is under control and is expected to be fully extinguished today.

The fire is suspected to have originated from material delivered by a waste collection truck on Wednesday.

An alarm was raised, and on-site workers immediately notified the site supervisor, allowing for rapid response.

NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon told Irie FM News that the fire is 80% extinguished.

Mr. Gordon said heavy winds in the area caused the smoke to spread.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade said heavy equipment, trucks, and dirt were used to cover the affected area.

It also said that significant work was done yesterday and affected residents and businesses will see a noticeable reduction in the smoke nuisance today.
