Transport Minister proposes re-certification of PPV operators, as part of efforts to reduce road fatalities

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has proposed that all Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators be re-certified as part of efforts to reduce road fatalities.

Mr. Vaz made the proposal at a meeting of the National Road Safety Council today.

He said no one should receive a PPV licence without certification from the Transport Authority.

Mr. Vaz noted that the plan is well advanced and will soon be implemented.

According to Mr. Vaz, he realizes that several PPV operators are not properly qualified.

His statement follows the deaths of two students of the Titchfield High School in Portland on Tuesday.

The students were reportedly being driven in a public passenger vehicle when it crashed into a truck parked on the side of the road.
