Spragga Benz calls for preservation of Fort Rocky

Outspoken dancehall artiste, Spragga Benz is using his social media platform to speak out on development work being done at Fort Rocky, Port Royal.

In one Instagram post, Spragga says despite being an entertainer, he does not support the move to develop Fort Rocky into an entertainment complex, citing the location’s unsuitability.

Spragga’s outcry stems from concerns raised by several organizations including Jamaica Environment Trust, The National Environment and Planning Agency, the opposition Peoples National Party, as well as the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation.

In recent days, the organizations have pointed out issues such as, unregulated development work, lack of consultation with relevant authorities, the destruction of mangroves, and demolition of historical structures as reasons against the development and use of the space as an entertainment complex.

In subsequent posts on Instagram, Spragga doubled down on calls to preserve the environment, insisting that the work being done at Fort Rocky, should be halted despite the damage already done. The entertainer also shared that Fort Rocky already has a great entertainment complex /cruise ship pier which is hardly being used.

Meanwhile, Entertainment Minister Olivia Grange has sought to assure the public that concerns raised about development works underway at Fort Rocky, are being addressed. While speaking at a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee in Parliament last Friday, she said steps are being taken to ensure that the entities involved in the development works, are compliant with regulations.
