Substantive arguments to begin in the case of Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants, today

Substantive arguments in the matter to determine if there should be a retrial for entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants are to begin today.

The case is before the Court of Appeal this week.

Yesterday prosecutors raised objections to aspects of the affidavits filed by the men and their relatives.

Among the issues raised is whether or not Kartel could manage a re-trial due to health reasons, the widespread publicity of the case, and if the men would get a fair trial.

One of Kartel’s lawyers, Alessandra LaBeach, told IRIE FM News that preliminary matters were dealt with yesterday.

She said her team is prepared for today’s proceedings.

In the meantime, the Appeal Court will request a report from the Supreme Court on how cases sent for retrial have been dealt with over the last six years.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn Campbell, otherwise called Shawn Storm, Andre St John and Kahira Jones had their murder convictions quashed by the Privy Council in March.

They were convicted of the 2011 murder of Clive “lizard” Williams.
