St. Catherine fisherfolk yet to commercialise and gain sales on new stock of fish placed in the Rio Cobre

Fisherfolk in St. Catherine are yet to commercialise and gain sales on the new stock of fish that was placed in the Rio Cobre, recently.

Since last year, there have been around three reported cases of fish kill in the river as a result of pollution.

A number of tilapia fingerlings were released into the river months ago as a temporary solution for those in the area who depend on the fish for food or make a living from it.

Speaking with IRIE-FM news, Founder and President of Advocacy Group ‘Friends of the Rio Cobre’ Kestonard Gordon said with the Christmas season fast approaching, residents are yet to have marketable catches to gain revenue.

He said it could be several months before the fish are mature enough for sale.

Mr. Gordon said the fisherfolk are hoping for more transparency and accountability into future matters regarding the Rio Cobre.
