Some Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators who ply routes in Kingston and St. Andrew are suggesting that salary increases or travel stipends for commuters could help to cushion the financial impact of the fare adjustment.

Eight per cent of the fare increase comes into effect today, while the remaining eight per cent will be implemented on July 1.

It comes amidst concerns from several commuters that the cost of living in the country is already at an all-time high.

Speaking with IRIE FM News this afternoon, one operator, who identified himself as Mr. Samuels, said the PPV fare hike should be coupled with an increase in passengers’ salaries.

He argued that if they are unable to afford the fare adjustments, the financial relief PPV operators are seeking will not be realised.

Mr. Samuels operates from Half-Way-Tree to Lawrence Tavern.

In the meantime, his colleague who transports passengers to and from Barbican expressed satisfaction with today’s announcement of the fare adjustment.
