Researchers consider extending hurricane season beyond 6 months

Director of the Meteorological Services of Jamaica, Evan Thompson says research is being conducted to determine if the Atlantic Hurricane Season needs to be extended, beyond the current six months.

The hurricane season officially commenced on June 1 and will continue until November 30.

Citing the development of storm systems outside of the official period, in recent years, Mr. Thompson said discussions and research are taking place to determine if an extension is necessary.

In outlining the projections for this hurricane season, Mr. Thompson warned that an overly active one is expected, again.

Mr. Thompson was speaking yesterday (June 15) at a National Disaster Risk Management Council meeting in Kingston.
