PPV operators who ply the route from Ocho Rios to Kingston say they are not impressed with JUTC’s adjustment to its service
Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators who ply the route from Ocho Rios to Kingston say they are not impressed with the Jamaica Urban Transit Company JUTC’s adjustment to its service, insisting the move does not go far enough to address their concerns.
JUTC announced that effective tomorrow, it will reduce the frequency of its Ocho Rios service, which operates from Ocho Rios to Spanish Town, Half-Way Tree and Downtown Kingston.
The state-run company said the adjustment follows concerns raised by Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators and forms part of its commitment to stakeholder engagement and responsible service planning.
It said that while it remains focused on providing safe, reliable and affordable transport for commuters, it also recognizes the need to maintain balance within the wider public transportation sector.
The operators protested last month, complaining that JUTC’s operations in the area were steadily eroding their customer base and making it difficult for them to sustain viable business operations.
The operators called for a more equitable arrangement to ensure they can maintain a sustainable livelihood.
However, despite the announcement operators say they still want fewer JUTC buses on the route, arguing that the current level of state-run service continues to affect their passenger base and threatens their livelihoods.
