Opposition urges government to meet with security guards to settle concerns

Opposition spokesperson on labour, Dr Angela Brown Burke has urged labour minister Karl Samuda to meet with the country’s security guards, in a bid to find solutions to their concerns.

These include salaries, working conditions and the contract scheme used by most security companies.

Speaking at a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee on Thursday, Dr Brown Burke said contract workers, in general, need to be protected by the government.

In response, labour minister Karl Samuda said he is not aware of an established group representing the interests of security guards.

He however pointed out, that he has been meeting with various trade union representatives, to discuss the issues.

Dr brown Burke then expressed disappointment with the minister’s response.

Mr Samuda stressed that the government has supported the rights of the security guards, by recognizing them as employees.
