Opposition calls on gov’t to postpone today’s opening of a section of the Southern Coastal Highway

The opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has called on government to postpone today’s opening of the section of the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP) that runs from Harbour View in St. Andrew to Yallahs Bridge in St. Thomas.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected to open the roadway at 1 PM, but the PNP has claimed that the project is not satisfactorily completed and poses a safety risk.

In a statement, Mayor of Morant Bay, Hubert Williams said up to yesterday (February 5), work was still underway along the stretch.

He accused the government of hastily opening the roadway before completing the necessary work to make it safe.

Mayor Williams added that there should be no official opening until the entire project is completed and ready to be delivered to the people.
