NRSC announces raft of measures to be implemented as part of efforts to reduce road fatalities

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones has announced a raft of measures to be implemented, as part of efforts to reduce road fatalities.

Among these are, improving the breathalyzer and ticketing systems, suspending licences, installing more closed circuit television cameras to detect infractions, and applying demerit points.

Dr. Jones was speaking at a media briefing following a meeting of the Council, yesterday.

He said the demerit point system, which will be rolled out in the next two weeks, will automatically suspend the licence of motorists who accumulate a certain number of points.

According to Dr. Jones, steps must be taken to change the behaviour of road users.

Dr. Jones noted that a few weeks ago, a 20% reduction in road fatalities was recorded, and this trend needs to be maintained.
