NEPA serves enforcement notice on NWC President for recent fish kill in Harbour Head, Kingston

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has served an enforcement notice on the president of the National Water Commission, NWC.

The notice was served on Monday, in relation to a recent fish kill in Harbour Head, Kingston.

NEPA reported that the fish kill was as a result of run-off of nutrients from nearby facilities.

It said organisms feed on these nutrients, resulting in their growth, which affects the oxygen level in the water.

In a statement today, Manager of Public Education and Corporate Communications at NEPA, Angela Hamilton said the enforcement notice requires the NWC to do several things, including, to cease the discharge of improperly treated sewage.

Meantime, NEPA has sought to clarify that the recent enforcement notice served on ‘German Ship Repair Jamaica Limited’ is not related to the fish kill.
