Met Services says drought affecting the island could last until June

The drought affecting sections of the island could last until May to June.

Principal Director of the Meteorological Services branch, Evan Thompson made the revelation during a post-cabinet press briefing Wednesday morning.

Noting that all parishes received below normal rainfall in February, Mr. Thompson said western parishes were affected mostly.

He said 6 parishes were characterized as experiencing drought. They are Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Clarendon, Portland and St. Mary.

Mr. Thompson said data also indicated that the drought conditions were exacerbated in March, as there was insufficient rainfall.

He said the dry conditions will continue for the coming weeks, but substantial rainfall is expected by May/June.
