JET renews call for harsher penalties for pollution of Rio Cobre

There is a renewed call for harsher penalties to be imposed on those responsible for pollution and subsequent fish kills at the Rio Cobre, in St. Catherine.

The appeal from the Jamaica Environment Trust, JET, follows a fish kill at the river, on Friday.

There have been several fish kills at the Rio Cobre, in recent times, and in some cases, charges have been laid against companies deemed responsible.

However, CEO of JET Dr. Theresa Rodriquez Moodie says it is frustrating, especially for residents and fisherfolk who benefit from the Rio Cobre, that the river continues to be polluted.

She says there ought to be better enforcement of environmental laws and harsher penalties for those who breach them.
