High level meeting on security situation in Haiti held in Kingston, today

Heads of government of 7 Caribbean nations, 8 international partner countries and personnel from the United Nations met in Kingston, today, to discuss the security situation in Haiti.

Caribbean Community, CARICOM Head, Dr. Irfaan Ali, who announced the meeting on Friday, chaired the talks.

The stakeholders, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are addressing a press conference now underway.

Noting that gang conflict continues to worsen the situation in Haiti, Mr. Holness expressed hope that safety and freedom will be restored to Haitians.

Meanwhile, several members of the United Nations were among those who converged in Jamaica today for a high level meeting on Haiti, convened by the Caribbean Community, CARICOM.

Speaking at a briefing at midday, Spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, noted that among those present from the UN were Chef de Cabinet Courtney Rattray and Head of the Department of Operational Support, Atul Khare. 

Mr. Dujarric noted that the UN’s message to the meeting echoed the need for the acceleration of plans to deploy the security support mission to Haiti.

He added that the trust fund to support the Haiti mission still stands at 10.8 million US dollars.
