Firefighters battling massive blaze on West Street in Port Antonio, Portland

Firefighters are battling a massive blaze on west street in Port Antonio, Portland, where sections of at least three buildings, including the Musgrave market have been damaged.

 

IRIE FM news understands that the fire which started at around 9 AM gutted a section of the market before spreading to an adjoining appliance and jewellery store.

 

The roof of a supermarket next to the store was also damaged during the fire.

 

Two units from the Jamaica Fire Brigade have responded to the blaze. Private water trucks are also assisting.

 

One vendor, Jeff Thompson told IRIE FM news that vendors rushed to remove their belongings from the market as news spread that the building was on fire.

 

He said some vendors have lost their livelihood.

 

A large crowd has since gathered at the Cenotaph Square at the intersection of West Street and William Street.

 

Traffic has also been diverted from West Street.
