Fire Brigade appeals to citizens to refrain from lighting fires as the country faces drought

As Jamaica continues to be impacted by drought conditions, the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is appealing to Jamaicans to refrain from lighting fires.

Last week, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the nation was experiencing a meteorological, hydrological and agricultural drought.

This information was reiterated by Director of the Meteorological Services, Evan Thompson, who said the drought conditions could persist until May or June.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, the JFB’s Commissioner, Stewart Beckford said since April, the Brigade has observed a steady increase in the number of bushfires across the country.

He explained that many of these fires could have been prevented.

Commissioner Beckord further explained that temperatures in Jamaica have increased, where sparks could result in a major blaze.

He reminded Jamaicans that with the country facing a drought, it is not prudent to use gallons of water to out bushfires.
