Dancehall Entertainer Vybz Kartel and 2 of his co-appellants remain behind bars

Dancehall Entertainer Vybz Kartel and two of his co-appellants will remain behind bars.

This as the Supreme Court today denied their application for a writ of habeas corpus seeking their immediate release from prison.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn Campbell otherwise called Shawn Storm, and Andre St John, had filed an application earlier this month seeking release.

The application followed the UK Privy Council’s ruling in march to quash the murder convictions of the 3 men.

They, along with Kahira Jones, had been convicted of the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The UK Privy Council ordered that the case be returned to Jamaica’s Appeal Court, to decide on whether a re-trial is necessary.

In court today, Justice Andrea Thomas, denied the application, and explained that in the absence of a verdict of acquittal by the UK Pivy Council, the charge of murder remains in effect.

One of the attorneys representing Kartel, Alessandra Labeach, said the judge also cited, stipulations in the corrections legislation, among her reasons for denial.

Ms. Labeach said the men remain in custody.

The Court of Appeal will soon begin to hear legal arguments on whether they should be retried.

She said the matter has been set for June 10 to 14.
