Culture Minister urges citizens to adhere to safety regulations at the island’s attractions, after drowning at Blue Lagoon

Culture Minister Olivia Grange has emphasized the need for observation of safety regulations, following a suspected case of drowning at the Blue Lagoon in Portland, yesterday (October 15).

Dead is Roje Murray of Gregory Park in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Reports from the Port Antonio police are that at about 1:00 p.m., Murray and friends were swimming in the lagoon when he got into difficulty and submerged.

The police and members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) commenced a search, but their efforts were futile.

Murray’s body was later fished from the water by divers from an independent body.

He was taken to the hospital where death was confirmed.

Reacting to the incident, Ms Grange said it is most regrettable that Murray lost his life at the Blue Lagoon.

In extending sympathies to Murray’s family and friends, the minister said this unfortunate occurrence amplifies the need for all users of the facility to comply with the regulations which are primarily for their safety.
