JFJ hopes that issues with Mario Deane trial will not persist today

In the wake of another delay to the start of the Mario Deane trial on Tuesday, it’s hoped that when the matter returns to court today, the issues will not persist.

The case was transferred from St. James to Westmoreland, due to juror shortage issues in St. James.

The trial was expected to start in the Westmoreland Circuit Court, but the judge informed that one juror was absent, and the trial was postponed.

Its been over a decade since the 3 police officers have been charged in relation to Deane’s death.

Deane’s relatives, along with human rights lobby group, Jamaicans For Justice, (JFJ) have been hoping that justice will finally be served, with the start of trial.

JFJ Executive Director Mickel Jackson expressed concern that if there is still a challenge with the juror who was absent Tuesday, the judge will have to go back to the jury pool to select a replacement, and that would cause further delay.

If the juror is able to serve, the matter can proceed.

Reports are that in August 2014, Deane was arrested on ganja related charges.

While at the Barnett Street police lock-up, Deane was allegedly beaten by other detainees.

He was admitted to hospital and died days later.

Three cops, who were reportedly on duty at the time of the incident, were charged with manslaughter, misconduct in a public office and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

They are: Constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant, as well as Corporal Elaine Stewart.

The cops are on bail.
