Attorney Bert Samuels welcomes appointment of Senior Prosecutor, Claudette Thompson as Acting DPP, noting her appointment will ensure uninterrupted justice administration

Attorney-at-law, Bert Samuels has welcomed the Governor General’s approval of an Acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), noting that the appointment will allow the administration of justice to proceed uninterrupted.

At the weekend, there were concerns over whether court proceedings would be impacted today following Friday’s ruling by the Constitutional Court, declaring the second extension of the tenure of former DPP, Paula Llewellyn as unconstitutional.

The concerns were laid to rest this morning, when the Justice Ministry named Senior Deputy  DPP, Claudette Thompson as the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions.

Reacting to Miss Thompson’s ascension in an interview with IRIE FM news this afternoon, Mr. Samuels emphasized the importance of the administration of justice continuing.

Noting Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck’s announcement of government’s intention to appeal the ruling made by the Constitutional Court, Mr. Samuels said he welcomes news of the appeal.

Acting DPP, Claudette Thompson has almost two decades of experience as a prosecutor.

She has served in her substantive post as Senior Deputy DPP since 2018 and previously acted as DPP between August 2 and September 6 in 2019.
