Chairman of the Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC), Brian Schmidt says the commission has put to rest the matter surrounding the selection of journalists for the upcoming political debates.

There has been controversy over the issue, after media reports suggested that the two main political parties objected to some journalists being on the panel.

The issue was discussed by the JDC and the parties and was not expected to make it to the public domain.

The Press Association of Jamaica expressed concern about the issue, and called on the Debates Commission to assert its authority and ensure a transparent, fair, and unbiased process.

Speaking at a JDC press conference today, Chairman Brian Schmidt said the commission is now moving forward with preparations and plans, related to the upcoming debates, slated for August 23, 26 and 28.

In the meantime, the JDC is making key adjustments to increase public interest in the upcoming political debates.

Mr. Schmidt said traditionally, the economy debate garners the least attention.

He said in response, the commission will be introducing a team format for the economy debate this year, with the aim of making it more engaging and dynamic.

The 2025 political debates will begin on August 23 with the social issues debate.

It will be followed by the economy debate on August 26.

The leaders’ debate featuring the leaders of the two main political parties will be held on August 28.
