Health Ministry says preliminary report shows prematurity as cause of increase in neo-natal deaths at Victoria Jubilee; rules out infection

A preliminary report has indicated that prematurity is the cause of an increase in the number of neo-natal deaths at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.

The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) made the declaration following public concern, stemming from media reports about the spike in dead babies at the hospital so far this month.

In a statement, SERHA acknowledged the public concern and said it has commenced an investigation.

SERHA explained that preliminary data indicate that the majority of the affected babies were born prematurely, with significant factors that could have predisposed them to serious illness.

It said the established surge plan was therefore activated and all steps were taken to care for the patients appropriately.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie stressed that there is no outbreak of infection at the hospital.

A public health epidemiological investigation will be conducted by SERHA, in collaboration with the Kingston and St. Andrew Health Department, and the team at the hospital.

Additional support is being provided by the Health Ministry.

The CMO said several measures have been implemented to reduce the likelihood of infections.

SERHA also expressed condolences to the families who have experienced the loss of a newborn during this period.

It said the findings of the investigation will guide any required interventions and a public update will be provided once the process is complete.

SERHA said it remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of care and safety for all patients across all facilities.
