The Jamaica Public Service (JPS), says power has been restored to more than 100 thousand customers who were affected by this morning’s earthquake. 

Initial assessments had revealed damage to several transmission and distribution lines, which caused the automatic shut-down of at least one substation and two generating plants, as part of the system’s built-in protection mechanism.

As a result, several communities were left without supply.

In an interview with IRIE FM News this afternoon, Director of Corporate Communications at JPS, Winsome Callum, said power has been restored to all customers. 

She said approximately 132,000 customers were affected. 

She noted that the other affected parishes were St. Catherine, Manchester and St. James. 

Meanwhile, normal traffic flow has been restored in the corporate area, after motorists traversing the area this afternoon experienced a major traffic gridlock, following the quake.

IRIE FM News understands that motorists were stuck in traffic for several hours in some cases.

This was despite efforts extended by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to man intersections where traffic signals had gone out due to power outages.

Head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary Mckenzie, notes that while a few traffic lights remain out of service, normal flow has resumed for the most part.
