The University of the West Indies Mona, says it has commenced an internal investigation, into allegations, that a male student held a female student against her will, in his room for three days and also assaulted her.

The incident occurred at one of the institution’s halls of residence, between Monday, February 6 and Thursday, February 9.

It’s reported that the female was burnt all over her body.

The accused, 20-year-old Matthew Hyde, of Braemer Avenue, in Kingston, has been charged with assault, occasioning grievous, bodily harm.

The university in a statement on Monday says it stands against gender based violence, and condemns the violent actions, against one of its female students, on the campus.

According to the UWI, on February 9, campus security received reports, that the female student was being held in Hyde’s room.

She was found to have suffered burns all over her body.

The 19-year-old woman has received medical attention, and the UWI says it has made arrangements for counselling support.

The university says it is cooperating fully with the police, and stands ready to provide additional medical and emotional support, to the injured student, her family and other students, who have been traumatized by the incident.

Meantime, the University of the West Indies’ guild of students has called on the UWI to utilize the full strength of its disciplinary procedures.

It also called for academic leniency for the affected student.

The guild said it shares the concerns expressed by the student body and supports the security forces in their efforts to address the matter.

It also urged students to share information on any similar incident happening within the university space.
