Ethics Committee member suggests Integrity Commission’s Leadership Commitment Document for Code of Conduct is unnecessary

Parliament’s Ethics Committee member, Juliet Cuthbert Flynn, has suggested that the Integrity Commission’s Leadership Commitment Document for Code of Conduct is unnecessary.

The document is a framework based on the seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

It is designed for Jamaica’s political leaders (Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet) to ensure ethical behaviour, transparency and high standards in office.

However, during this morning’s sitting of the Committee, Mrs. Cuthbert Flynn questioned whether the document was redundant.

She argued that politicians already swore to uphold the seven principles when they took the oath of office.

She said some of the requirements of the document are synonymous with the duties of the Ethics Committee.
