The Government has agreed to lend the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) 150 million US dollars to assist with restoration efforts, following the passage of hurricane Melissa.
Energy minister, Daryl Vaz made the disclosure yesterday in parliament.
JPS recently asked the government for an extension to its current licence, which will expire in July 2027 to secure financing for post-hurricane restoration efforts.
Mr. Vaz said the government is not prepared to discuss the extension of JPS’ licence.
He said, with the loan, JPS is now committed to restoring power to the worst affected parishes by February 2026.
Mr. Vaz said the power company will have 5 years to repay the loan.
