The Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) will be partnering with other advocacy groups, including the National Council for Senior Citizen to develop and implement comprehensive safety initiatives for the elderly.
The CCRP’s pledge follows the death of 94-year-old Olganese Taylor in a house fire in Spanish Town, St. Catherine on Saturday.
Reports are that residents alerted the fire brigade to the fire.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the dwelling was already engulfed in flames.
Following cooling down operations, Taylor’s charred remains were found.
The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.
CCRP Founder and Executive Chair Jean Lowrie Chin said the incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect senior citizens.
She said the CCRP remains committed to advocating for the welfare and safety of senior citizens and will continue to address the critical issues affecting them.
