Montego-Bay mayor commits to addressing harassment of tourists

Mayor of Montego-Bay, Richard Vernon, has announced plans to address growing concerns over the harassment of tourists in St. James.

He says, there have been reports from hotels about the issue, with stakeholders pushing for stronger enforcement strategies, to protect the parish’s tourism sector, a major contributor to the economy.

Mayor Vernon says protecting tourist experiences is vital.

He notes that among the measures to tackle the problem, is the establishment of a police post at the Old Hospital Park, on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard.

Mayor Vernon says the post will be a key step, towards making Montego-Bay a safer and more welcoming destination.

He adds that discussions are underway, regarding a business improvement district along Jimmy Cliff Boulevard.

This would allow local businesses to play a more active role in security and infrastructure improvements.

He was speaking at a press conference at the St. James Municipal Corporation on Monday.
