Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie today defended the response of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), to yesterday’s earthquake.
This, in the wake of criticism from the Opposition, about several issues, including the lack of information to the public during and after the event, and the political directorate taking the lead instead of the technical personnel.
There were tense moments during today’s sitting of the lower house, as the opposition raised questions and reacted to a statement by Mr. McKenzie.
While posing questions, Opposition Spokesperson Natalie Neita Garvey said based on what happened yesterday, Jamaica was not properly prepared.
In response, Mr. McKenzie was adamant that ODPEM, as well as other entities involved in the disaster response mechanism, reacted within good time.
He said contrary to what was claimed, ODPEM has been keeping the country informed.
