After several missed dates, teachers have begun receiving their March salaries and retroactive payments.
The Jamaica Teachers’ Association, JTA confirmed that the payments began this afternoon.
Educators have been anxiously awaiting their salaries under the restructured compensation system, following the signing of an agreement with the government earlier this month.
The ministry had stated that given the gravity of the process to accurately convert, calculate, approve and upload the retroactive and new salaries, in collaboration with the Finance Ministry, it could not pay the teachers earlier.
Teachers have also been very concerned about some anomalies connected to payments.
JTA President Lasonja Harrison was unable to say how many persons had been paid up to this point.
She states that the association is disappointed with how this issue unfolded.
It’s reported that there are 1,400 teachers for whom issues are yet to be fully resolved. It’s the expectation that they will be paid by Friday.
