Five Jamaicans were among 216 sex trafficking victims rescued in Guyana, in the past year.
That’s according to the 2022 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons.
The report from the US State Department noted that in addition to the five Jamaicans who were victims of sex trafficking, two other Jamaicans in the country were victims of labour trafficking.
One of the sex trafficking victims has so far been repatriated to Jamaica.
Reacting to the findings of the report, Jamaica’s National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Diahann Gordon Harrison noted that Jamaicans continue to be trafficked in several countries across the world.
Gordon Harrison said Government must continue to build awareness of human trafficking so that citizens know the risks and can avoid falling into trafficking situations.
