Stephen Curry named USA Basketball’s 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year
The NBA’s and Warriors most prolific player Stephen Curry was named USA Basketball’s 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year and Steve Kerr was awarded 5-on-5 Coach of the Year for their contributions to the 2024 Olympic Gold Medal run, USAB announced on Wednesday.
Curry finished as USA Basketball’s leading scorer throughout the Olympics (14.8 PPG) and became the only NBA player in program history to combine for 60 points in the semifinals and finals, clinching his first Gold Medal.
He scored 36 points and sank nine 3-pointers, leading a comrback win over Serbia in the semi-final at the recent Paris Olympics , and tallied 24 points with eight made 3-pointers in the Championship victory over host France.
Curry was named to FIBA’s All-Star Five for the 2024 Olympics, recognizing the five best players in the tournament, joined by his United States teammate LeBron James, his current Warriors teammate Dennis Schröder (Germany), Serbia’s Nikola Jokic and France’s Victor Wembanyama.
Curry became one of nine players to win an Olympic gold medal and also have an NBA title, NBA MVP and Finals MVP. When you account for his four NBA championships and two MVPs, he becomes just one of five players along with LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Bill Russell.
