Manchester City launch investigation into racist and misogynistic abuse directed at Reggae Girlz striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw

Manchester City has launched an investigation into racist and misogynistic abuse directed at Reggae Girl captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, following the club’s dramatic 4-3 defeat to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.

The club has confirmed that Shaw was targeted with offensive messages after the match, prompting the team to report the matter to the police.

In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Manchester City expressed their disgust at the abuse Shaw received:

Manchester City were appalled to learn that Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was subjected to racist and misogynistic abuse following Sunday’s fixture. Discrimination of any kind, either in stadiums or online, will not be tolerated and has absolutely no place inside or outside the game.”

The statement further emphasized that Shaw had made the decision not to publicly share the offensive messages to avoid giving any further attention to the individuals responsible for them. However, the content of the messages has been handed over to the authorities for further investigation. The club also made it clear that they would provide Shaw with their full support as she copes with the vile treatment she’s endured.

Shaw, who has netted an impressive 86 goals for the club, made her 100th appearance for Manchester City during the Arsenal match. She came off the bench in the 66th minute, marking her return to action after an injury kept her sidelined since early December.

In November she was hit by an object during a Women’s Champions League 2-1 win on the road for Manchester City against Hammarby FC at Stockholm Arena in Sweden, prompting governing body UEFA to open an investigation.

The 28 year old, after a one-year absence, returned to action for Jamaica and scored twice in the first game of a two-match international friendly series against South Africa that took place at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex in Montego Bay on November 29, 2024 and December 2, 2024.
