Central Athletics Championships: Edwin Allen and St. Jago defend titles

The curtains came down on an action-packed second and final day of the Central Athletics Championships on Wednesday, with defending champions Edwin Allen and St. Jago successfully retaining their respective titles in a thrilling conclusion at GC Foster College.

Edwin Allen Girls Reign Supreme
Edwin Allen’s girls team showcased their dominance once again, defending their title with an impressive 389 points. They finished well ahead of Holmwood, who accumulated 310 points, and Hydel, who claimed third place with 279 points. Vere Technical secured fourth place with 204 points, while St. Jago rounded out the top five with 152.5 points.

St. Jago Boys Defend Their Crown
In the boys’ category, St. Jago also managed to defend their title, amassing 327 points. Edwin Allen finished second with 267 points, followed by Clarendon College in third with 132 points. Manchester (110 points) and Holmwood (109 points) completed the top five in a competitive race for the podium spots.

Record-Breaking Performances Steal the Spotlight
The final day of the championships saw a spectacular 17 new records set, pushing the total number of records broken over the two-day meet to an astonishing 29.

Among the standout performances was Asara Frater of Vere Technical, who broke the 3000 meters Open record with a time of 10 minutes 15.24 seconds. Ryan Achau of St. Jago also made history, claiming the Boys’ 5000 meters record in a time of 15 minutes 15.93 seconds.

Several St. Jago athletes were among the record-breakers, Briana Stewart leapt an impressive 1.65 meters in the Girls Class Three High Jump, while Raniel Burke secured victory in the Class Two 400 meters hurdles with a time of 54.65 seconds.

Tevin Wilson matched Stewart’s high jump feat, also clearing 1.65 meters in the Class Three Boys High Jump. Rajaun Romelly stole the spotlight in the Boys Class Three 200 meters, first breaking the record with a time of 22.83 seconds in the preliminaries, before lowering the mark to 22.30 seconds in the final.

The meet also saw some intense and record-breaking sprints. Ravon Black of Denbigh ran 22.24 seconds in the Class Two 200 meters, before Jaydon Collins of Holmwood bested that time in the final, clocking in at 21.82 seconds.

Shanice Williams of St. Jago impressed in the Class Four Girls 70 meters hurdles, posting a time of 10.80 seconds in the preliminaries. Romario Jibbison, also of St. Jago, ran 13.84 seconds to qualify for the Class One Boys 110 meters hurdles final, while Cindy Rose of St. Jago claimed victory in the Class One Girls 800 meters final with a time of 2 minutes 12.62 seconds.

Jevaun Tomlin of Bellefield dominated the Class Three 800 meters final, winning in a time of 2 minutes 03.01 seconds.

Edwin Allen also made their mark with impressive relay performances. The girls’ team shattered the Class Two Girls 4×100 meters relay record, clocking in at an outstanding 42.23 seconds. Not to be outdone, the Edwin Allen boys set the Class One 4×100 meters relay record, crossing the line in 40.95 seconds.
