Works Agency says two critical corridors in St. Catherine remain impassable

Two critical corridors in St. Catherine remain impassable following the passage of Tropical Storm Rafael earlier this week.

They are the Bog Walk Gorge and the roadway from Bartons to Ginger Ridge, particularly at Connors.

The National Works Agency (NWA) says extensive cleaning is required before either roadway will be accessible.

The agency is trying to get equipment into the areas to clear multiple impediments along the two roadways.

In the case of the Bog Walk Gorge, a section is blocked by a massive boulder which will require being broken up before it can be removed.

There are also smaller boulders and fallen trees at other sections of the roadway, as well as blocked drains that are causing inundation.

The NWA says the area from which the boulders were dislodged will likely be unstable and will require some assessment before the area can be safely used.

Meanwhile, the roadway from Bartons to Ginger Ridge is blocked by landslides at multiple locations as well as fallen trees and rocks.

The NWA says no timeline can be given as to when these roadways will be accessible to motor vehicles.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.

There is no alternative route for vehicular access to the community of Connors.

Several communities along the impacted roadways are without power as the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is also unable to access the areas.
