Transport Minister, Daryl Vaz says the proposed rate increases for use of the east-west leg of Highway 2000 are necessary.

The proposal was published in a notice by his ministry with prospective toll increases as high as $200, effective Saturday, July 6.

Mr. Vaz said the increases are part of an annual review process mandated by the concession agreement between the government and Trans-Jamaica highway.

He said there are some discounts.

He was speaking during a post cabinet press briefing this morning.
